Warriors go 2-0 at PA/NY Duals

Troy HayreROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 25 ranked Lycoming College wrestling team helped Pennsylvania claim a 4-0 victory over New York in the annual PA/NY Duals, held at the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, Jan. 3. The Warriors defeated SUNY-Oswego and RIT to finish 2-0- at the Duals.

Chris Dahlheimer, Andrew Lewis, Mike Maurer and Troy Hayre all went undefeated on the afternoon to lead the Warriors (7-2).

Lycoming and King’s College made up the Pennsylvania team, both defeating each of the New York squads on the afternoon.

The Warriors opened the duals with a 33-10 victory against SUNY-Oswego and followed that with a 32-8 victory against the host institution.

In the opening match, Lycoming claimed wins in seven weight classes.

Stephen Hinton (Montclair, Va.) opened the match with a 5-2 decision over Scott McGregor at 125 pounds. Andrew Lewis (Wyalusing, Pa) was granted a forfeit at 133. Mike Maurer (Towanda, Pa.) earned a major decision (16-1) over Mike Howard at 149. Zach Frederick (West Chester, Pa.) also earned a major decision, defeating Nick Rodgers at 157. Josh Gochnauer (Muncy, Pa.) earned a forfeit win at 165. Chris Dahlheimer (Felton, Pa.), ranked fifth in the nation at 165 pounds, moved up to 174 and earned a 7-0 decision against Ethan Phillips. Troy Hayre (Falls Church, Va.) earned the only pin of the match, pinning Craig Baker in 2:27 at 184.

In the second match of the day, the Warriors won eight weight classes, including the final seven.

At 133, Andrew Lewis picked up a close decision, 4-3, against Shawn Burrington. Lycoming also earned a one-point decision at 149 when Tom Barger (Clearfield, Pa.) defeated Adam Hugunine, 9-8. Dahlheimer showed his versatility by dropping down to 157 against RIT, recording a major decision (17-8) against Jason Wake. Mike Maurer defeated Evan Williams, 14-8, at 165. Troy Hayre earned a 6-3 decision over Nick Ryan at 174. Kyle Crouthamel (Hamilton, N.J.) recorded the only pin of the match when he pinned John Durfee in 3:32 at 184. Bryan Kopesky (Phillipsburg, N.J.) won a 12-6 decision against Stephen Avorkilya at 197 and Rick Ausem (Towanda, Pa.) closed out the match with a 1-0 decision over Scott Morrison at 285.

The Warriors will return home on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9-10, for the 21st annual Budd Whitehill National Duals. 20 teams and more than 15 nationally ranked wrestlers will be on hand for the two day event.
