Freshmen lead Warriors at NCAA Mideast Regionals

Final Brackets

YORK, Pa. –
As they had all year long, the freshman duo of 157-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) and 149-pounder Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) again led the Lycoming College wrestling team at the NCAA Mideast Regional on Sunday, March 2, at the M&T Field House, as both grapplers placed to lead the team.

Unfortunately, Barger and Lansberry each finished fifth for the Warriors, as the top three placewinners in each weight class advance to the NCAA Division III Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 14-15.

The Warriors finished 14th in a 17-team field with 29 team points. Third-ranked Messiah won the Mideast Regional title with 109 points, while 19th-ranked Mount Union took second with 76 points, 27th-ranked Waynesburg took third with 72.5 points and 18th-ranked Brockport took fourth with 68 points.

Lansberry finished his rookie year with a 35-10 record, breaking the school's record for wins by a freshman of 32 set by Jason Smith in 2003-04. The 2013 PIAA state runner-up started his tournament with a 4-1 decision against Washington & Jefferson's Trevor Meyers before he dropped a 7-5 decision to Mount Union's Tyler Johnston in the quarterfinals.

He rebounded to get into the placement rounds, as he notched an 8-1 win over Baldwin Wallace's Graham Montague and followed that with a 9-1 major decision against Messiah's Chad Williamson. In the consolation semifinals, though, he dropped a 2-0 decision to RIT's junior Brad Mayville. Mayville went on to earn the third and final NCAA bid while Lansberry rebounded with a 3-2 win over Johnston in the fifth-place match.

Barger picked up a pair of wins to reach the semifinals of the 157-pound bracket, as he notched a pin of Case Western Reserve's Brian Snyder in 6:59, and followed that with a 3-2 win over Adam Kritzer of York. However, sixth-ranked Josh Etzel of Washington & Jefferson posted a 6-4 win over Barger in the semifinals and in the consolation semifinal, Waynesburg's Sam Lombardo notched a 4-2 win over Barger. Falling into the fifth-place match, Barger earned a medical default to finish the season with a 29-12 record.

Five other Warriors – junior 141-pounder Caleb Willey (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area), junior 165-pounder Brian Watkins (Bear Gap, Pa./Southern Columbia), senior 174-pounder Johnathan Secor (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pompton Plains), senior 184-pounder Greg Wetzel (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) and freshman 197-pounder Skylar Ebner (Muncy, Pa./Muncy Area) - won a consolation bracket match, but fell in the second round of the consolation bracket to fall out of contention to place.

Willey finished the season with a 29-13 record, Watkins 22-15, Secor 18-14, Wetzel 29-12 and Ebner 16-19.

The Warriors finished 13-8 overall under 21st-year head coach Roger Crebs, the best record for the Warriors since the 2007-08 squad went 11-5.
