WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
Senior 184-pounder Greg Wetzel (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) came from behind and freshman 157-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) beat his teammate in the championship bouts of their weight class to lead the Lycoming College wrestling team to a tie for fourth at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Lamade Gym.

A record nine Warriors placed for the Warriors, with both Barger and junior Brian Watkins (Bear Gap, Pa./Southern Columbia) reaching the finals at the 157-pound weight class, as Barger outdueled his teammate, 4-1.

Wetzel, meanwhile, had a hard road to the title, as he fell behind, 4-2, in the second period against Ithaca's Daniel Glinko in the championship bout. However a takedown late in the second tied the score and Wetzel sealed the match with an escape and a third-period takedown to take the 8-5 win.

Ithaca, though, took the team title with 142.5 points, while SUNY Cortland took second at 124 and Brockport was third at 123. Lycoming tied with SUNY Oneonta at 101.5 and RIT, Alfred State and Oswego State rounded out the tournament.

At 157 pounds, the Lycoming showdown was set up as Barger notched an 11-9 decision against Oneonta's Samuel Rachman in the quarterfinals and Watkins notched a major decision against Oneonta's Frankie Porvenzano, 14-2. In the semifinals, Barger took down the top-seed, Cortland State's James Ondris, 4-3, and Watkins beat the No. 2 seed, Kevin Collins, 3-2, setting up the championship.

Wetzel started his run with a 14-0 major decision against Oswego's Cody LaFever before posting a 2-0 decision against Liam Korbul of Ithaca in the semifinals, setting up his championship bout.

Six other Warriors placed, led by third-place finishes by junior 141-pounder Caleb Willey (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) and freshman 149-pounder Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain). Sophomore 165-pounder Matt Neff (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and freshman 197-pounder Skylar Ebner (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) each took fourth and senior 133-pounder Zack Finn (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) took fifth. Senior 174-pounder Johnathan Secor (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) rounded out the placers, taking sixth.

Willey started his run with a 9-2 decision against Oswego's Tomas Garcia before a 7-1 win over Bryan Mongiello of Alfred State in the quarterfinals. However, a one-point loss put him in the consolation bracket, where he pinned Michael Leonard in 29 seconds and then notched a 12-4 major decision against Jake Sepor in the third-place match.

Lansberry improved to 24-7 on the season, as he picked up a fall in the opening round against Oneonta's Adam Greene. However, a loss in the semifinals dropped him into the consolation semifinals, where he notched a 3-2 win over Brockport's Jordan Dyer and added a 4-2 win over Cortland's Lucas Ciancamino in the third-place match.

At 165 pounds, Neff started his day with a loss, but followed that with three consolation bracket wins, notching a fall over Cortland's Brendan Dent in 3:34 before a sudden-victory 3-1 win over Oneonta's Andrew Werther in the consolation third round. After a medical forfeit win, he lost the third-place match to Oneonta's Shaun Gillen, 9-3.

Ebner used two pins to his fourth place finish at 197 pounds, as he opened the tournament by dropping Ithaca's Zachary Conner in 2:14. After a loss to top-seeded Paul Glover, he posted a fall in 22 seconds against Cortland's Tyler Lilly. However, he was pinned in the third-place match by Oneonta's Chad Obzud.

Finn moved up a place after finishing sixth as a junior. He started with an 11-6 win over Oswego's Jonathan Ptacek before a loss in the quarterfinals. He rebounded with a 3-1 win over Cortland's Chris Cataldo and posted a sudden-victory, 9-7 win over RIT's Greg Jones. After a loss in the consolation semifinals, Finn earned a medical forfeit to take fifth.

Secor started his run to a sixth-place finish with an 11-0 win over Cortland's Colin Barber before adding a 4-0 win over RIT's Nick Fisk. However, he lost in the semifinals and was forced to take an injury default in the consolation semifinals.
