Tournament Brackets

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Three Lycoming College wrestlers started their careers by placing at the Monarch Invitational to lead the team to a fifth-place finish in a 13-team field at the season-opening tournament on Saturday, Nov. 2.
 
Four Warriors placed at the event, led by third-place finishes from freshmen 133-pounder Andrew Gipe (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport), 149-pounder Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) and 157-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area). Junior heavyweight Sam Batchelor (Birsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) won six matches during his route to a fourth-place finish.
 
The Warriors finished tied for fifth with RIT, while Cortland State took the team title with 105.5 points.
 
Gipe started his career with a 4-1 day, as he posted a 5-2 win over Mike Nguyen of RIT in his first match. He followed that with a 6-2 win over Roger Williams' Pat LaCroix before falling to Sean Kempf in 5:14 in the semifinals. He rebounded in the wrestlebacks, posting an overtime, 3-2 win over Nguyen before beating LaCroix, 3-2, in the third-place match.
 
Lansberry also had a successful opening tournament, notching a 4-1 record. He opened the tournament with a 17-0 tech fall against Roger Williams' Tom Sewell, then pinned Wilkes' Sam Tareky in 1:30. In the semifinals, veteran Brad Mayville pinned Lansberry in overtime, but the 149-pounder responded in the wrestlebacks, posting a 7-4 win over Oswego State's Curtis Rowley and a 5-2 win over Roger Williams' Daniel Downes in the third-place match.
 
Barger fought out of a first-round pigtail, posting a 4-2 win over Roger Williams' Ryan Butler before notching a 7-2 win over Cortland State's Chris Sarro and pinning Roger Williams' Tyler Herzog to reach the semifinals. He lost to Washington & Jefferson's Josh Etzel, 14-1, but rebounded with a 10-2 major decision over Wilkes' Stephen Tuener and wrapped up the tournament with a pin of Wilkes' Tyler Lauchaire in 4:47 to take third.
 
Batchelor took a long road to his fourth-place finish, the highest of his career. He started with a  4-0 win over Roger Williams' Jon Cavaretta before falling to Oneonta State's Stephen Provenzano, 7-5. In the wrestlebacks, he reeled off five straight wins, posting a 6-1 win over Gettysburg's Joey Bragg, a 5-3 win over Cortland State's Chris Alianakian and he pinned freshman teammate Scott DeBoey (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central). He added another 5-2 win over Oneonta State's Connor Murphy before a medical default moved him into the fourth-place match, where he lost to Cortland State's Andy Scopino, 12-5.
 
Sophomore 125-pounder Jake Witmer (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) and junior 141-pounder Caleb Willey (Towanda, Pa./Towanda Area) each also posted three wins, but did not place in the top four.
 
The Warriors get back on the mat on Tuesday, Nov. 12, when they host York (Pa.) at 7:30 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
