Clark appointed ninth director of athletics in Lycoming history; Guistina named assistant AD

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Mike Clark, a 1993 Lycoming College graduate, has been appointed the College’s director of athletics and will continue as the Warriors’ head football coach, Vice President for Administration and Planning Dr. Sue Gaylor, who oversees athletics, announced on Wednesday, Jan. 11.  Joe Guistina, the College’s sports information director since 2010, has been given additional responsibilities as the assistant director of athletics.

“Mike has the talent, experience and confidence to do a great job for the department and our student-athletes,” Lycoming President Dr. James Douthat said. “As our head football coach, he has also demonstrated that he knows how to build and sustain highly competitive athletic programs. Joe’s fine work as our sports information director quickly gained the respect of everyone in the athletic department and underscored his broad approach to athletic management. I am confident he, too, will excel in an expanded role.”

Clark replaces Chris Monfiletto, the football team’s offensive coordinator, served as director of athletics since July 2011 before recently being named head football coach at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

Clark, who holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Rowan University, has been the head football coach at Lycoming since 2008, compiling a 25-16 (.610) record and mentoring 33 all-conference selections, four All-Americans and one Academic All-American.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to become the director of athletics at my alma mater,” said Clark, who earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. “I’d like to thank Dr. Douthat and Dr. Gaylor for the opportunity. I look forward to working with Joe Guistina, Christen Ditzler [senior woman administrator] and the other coaches. I am also excited about working with our student-athletes in helping them become successful both in the classroom and the field of competition.”

With deep roots at the College, Clark has spent more than a decade around the Williamsport campus, beginning in 1989 when he came to the school as an offensive lineman under the legendary Frank Girardi. He was a part of four NCAA playoff teams, including the 1990 national runners-up.

After spending two-years at Rowan as a graduate assistant and two as the tight ends and running backs coach at Princeton University, he returned to Lycoming in 1998 as an assistant coach for Girardi, helping the team win two more MAC titles before leaving in 2000 for Davidson College. He served as offensive coordinator for the Wildcats before coming to Lycoming as head coach in 2008. He led the Warriors to a MAC title in his first year back with the program.

Clark becomes the ninth director of athletics. He and his wife, Danielle, have three children, Allison, Brendan and Emily. They reside in Montoursville.

Guistina, a 2004 graduate of Susquehanna University, has eight years of experience in athletic communications, including six years at Division I institutions. He earned a master’s degree in informatics from the University at Buffalo in 2006. He resides in Williamsport with his wife, Sarah.
