LaCROSSE, Wis. – For a full seven minutes of Friday night, March 11’s NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships quarterfinal match, it looked like senior Isaiah Britton (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) would pull off a shocking upset of No. 1 seed and defending national champion Isaac Dukes of Case Western Reserve University. However, a penalty point and a sudden victory takedown helped Dukes sneak away with a 10-8 win at the LaCrosse Center. Britton fell in the consolation quarterfinals late Friday night to end his run at the tournament.
Britton wrestled tough against the 33-2 Dukes, posting an early first-period takedown and adding another late in the period to take a 5-4 lead at the end of the period. In the second period, Dukes posted an escape to tie the match before a takedown gave him a 7-5 lead.
In the third period, Britton chose bottom and got an escape to move within a point before he scored on a single and earned a takedown with less than 15 seconds left to take a n 8-7 lead. He rode out the remaining time, but a locked hands call helped Dukes tie the match with the awarded penalty point.
In overtime, Dukes scored a takedown to take the win.
