 ALBANY N.Y. --- The Lycoming College wrestling team traveled to Albany, N.Y. for a tri-meet on Sunday, Feb. 8. But this competition was unlike any other from the season as it featured two Division I opponents in SUNY-Binghamton and Boston University.
While the Warriors fell in both matches, they were able to gain valuable experience against wrestlers at the highest levels of the sport.
In the first match against Boston, a 37-9 loss, a pair of Warriors posted victories. Thomas Barger grabbed a win at 141 pounds with a 7-2 decision against the Terriers’ Albert Rush. Kyle Crouthamel picked up an injury forfeit at 184 pounds in the first period.
During a 31-3 loss versus Binghamton, Troy Hayre was the lone Warrior to pick up a victory with a 4-2 decision against Matt Berretta.
During the meet, several Lycoming wrestlers were able to keep their matches close, with Mike Maurer falling in a 9-8 decision to Binghamton's Brandon Toro-Segarra. Zach Frederick also fell in a one-point match at 157. Boston’s Ben Mandelbraut earned an escape late in the third period to record a 6-5 victory against Frederick. Bryan Kopesky fell in his 197 pound bout in a 6-4 decision to Karl Korpi of Binghamton.
The Warriors will complete their regular-season next Saturday, Feb. 21 when they head to SUNY-Oswego for the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships. Matches begin at 10 a.m.
